Chapter 1. E-commerce — for beginners

How the role differs and where the first money comes from.

A store starts with one vertical

An online store in this chapter is one shopfront for one vertical. A vertical is a type of goods: clothes, cosmetics, home goods or another narrow shelf. A person arrives and immediately sees what is sold here. A store of “everything” is not the start. The first money is a paid order from that shelf. A like and a follow do not replace an order. Until there is one vertical, a product card, a price and delivery, a second shelf stays closed.

Dropshipping: a catalog without your own warehouse

Training

Dropshipping is a supplier catalog that is already built. The product is already photographed and described. You place it in your store, and after the order the supplier ships it, not your warehouse. CJ Dropshipping, AliExpress and similar catalogs are built for this. People open them to start a store without buying a batch. The first week is one vertical and ten cards from one catalog. The price includes the goods, shipping and the payment fee. Someone else's brand and photos you have no right to use do not go on the card.

A factory, directly

Training

A direct buy is a batch from a factory. You look for production in your vertical: a workshop, packaging, assembly. First you ask for a sample and the minimum batch. Then you write down the price, the time, the defects and who owns the design. The goods come to you, and you ship them to the buyer. You do not put someone else's trademark on the product. If the factory already makes another brand, that batch is not sold as the original. You look at the sample before paying for the whole batch.

The card, the price and the stock

The product card says what will arrive: a photo of your sample or a photo you have the right to use, the name, the contents or the size, the price and the time. The price covers the buy, shipping and the fee. Stock is how many pieces you can sell now. If there are no pieces, the card does not keep a buy button. One card is one product. A second card starts when the first one already has a clear price and a clear stock.

A marketplace connection

Training
Free

A connection links the store to a seller cabinet on a marketplace. The order, the stock and the delivery status move between them. You connect it in the official seller cabinet, with that marketplace's tools. You do not copy orders by hand at night from one sheet to another once the link exists. The first link is one store, one marketplace and the same ten cards. A second marketplace opens when the first one already has an order and a stock count that matches.

Ads inside the marketplace

Training
Free

Ads inside a marketplace are a paid placement of your card in that marketplace's search and recommendations. The bid and the daily cap are set in the marketplace ad cabinet. A placement outside, in another ad network, is a separate spend. The first test is one card and a small cap. If the orders do not cover that placement, you do not raise the bid and you do not add a second card to the ads.

Delivery and returns

Training
Free

Before payment you tell the person the time, the delivery cost and what happens if the goods do not fit. A return is a rule, not a surprise after a complaint. A tracking number, if there is one, goes to the buyer from the order, not from a public chat. If delivery eats the price, you do not advertise the card. First you change the price or the shipping method and watch one new order.

The first order is the check

Training
Free

The first order checks the set: the vertical, the card, the price, the stock and delivery. After it you write down what the goods and the shipping cost and what the buyer paid. If the cost is above the payment, you do not copy that card. You do not open a second vertical or a second marketplace until this pair of numbers exists for the first set.
