Chapter 1. Email — for beginners

A letter goes to a person who left their address themselves and understands what you will write about. A bought pile of someone else's addresses is not a list. Those letters do not arrive, they damage the sender address, and they are not the mailing this chapter is about. The first letter reminds the person why they subscribed and asks for one action.

The subject says what is inside, without shouting and without a promise that is not in the offer. The letter has one call and one tracked link. A second offer does not go in the same letter: otherwise you cannot see what was opened and where people went. The button is named as the action, not as the word “click”.

The address is left on your page, in your form, with a clear line about what the letters will contain. You do not tick the box for the person in advance. An unsubscribe link is always in the letter and it works. An address the person asked to remove is removed. The next letter does not go to them.

The sender name and address are yours, and they do not change from letter to letter without a reason. The person should recognize who is writing. Someone else's famous name does not go in the sender field. If letters land poorly in the inbox, you first check whether the person recognizes the sender and whether you send too often, you do not buy a new list.

Delivery is not a click and not a lead. You look at how many letters were opened, how many used the one link and how many reached the offer action. If they open and do not click, the inside or the button is weak. If they do not open, the subject is weak or the person does not remember you. You do not raise traffic spend from one mailing. Those three numbers come first.

You name the frequency at signup and you keep it. A person closes a daily mailbox that has no reason. A letter goes out when the topic has one piece of news or one offer, not because “something must be sent”. A pause is more honest than an empty letter with someone else's promise.
